"Thank you for your wonderful book (Chapter After Chapter). I couldn't put it down. So much of your book I could relate to, such as the paragraph on page 47, where it says that most writers aren't social butterflies, and that introversion, weirdness, isolation, and distaste for large festive gatherings are the hallmarks of the writing personality. Wow! That's me! Only when I read that to my husband, he disagreed...Boy, you know me better than he does. Again, thanks for your writing wisdom. Just knowing there are other weirdos like me out there, gives me hope that I can do this writing thing. Best wishes." ~ Alexa D.
"Thank you for writing Chapter after Chapter. It is the lead member of my six-book pit crew! I love the book for the wisdom and fresh ideas, but just as much for the sheer enjoyment of your writing. I feel that I am a member of your writing class, and that I've had the great pleasure of being well coached and warmly encouraged. All the best, and keep writing." ~ Clif Petty
"My name is Erin and I am 13 years old. I just finished Page after Page, and let me say I was absolutely inspired. Never before reading your book would I have been able to come to the computer/paper every single day and write. After finishing the book, I was so sad that it was over, and now am so glad to find you wrote Chapter After Chapter, and plan to get my hands on it as soon as I can. I have just started the 11th chapter of one of my books, and am on the 2nd of another. Thank you for your wisdom." ~ Erin
"Hi, I just wanted to drop a quick line because I read your book Chapter after Chapter cover to cover yesterday. This, of course, means I skipped all the exercises so I'll have to read it cover to cover again. I'm fine with that. I loved your book. too have well over a hundred books about writing, although I personally haven't had the nerve to actually count them, and I was surprised how fresh and new your book was to me." ~ Christy Johnson
"Your book (Chapter After Chapter) was so good I could hardly stand to read it. (As a writer and also a reader, I know I don't have to explain this feeling to you.) And the book came to me purely by accident, a package that wasn't ordered and could have easily been tossed back into the return mail. But I opened it, looked at it, and loved it (right down to the page design). I'm now 57. I've written, and edited, and taught writing at the university level while acquiring my master's... know that your book brought such pure joy as I read it..it made me want to try again...it made me remember what it was like to write because "I couldn't NOT write." You are such a joy to read. Best wishes." ~ Eileen Baca, Reno, Nevada
"Hi! My husband bought and read your book, Page after Page. He suggested I read it also. I finished it two days ago. Last night we started reading it together. We enjoyed your book and wanted to let you know. We will keep you posted as to our progress with our writing. I've kept a journal for 30 years. Thanks for writing the book! Good, helpful information. PS: we are doing the exercises." ~ Beth
"Heather, I am so glad to have found your book Chapter after Chapter today. After months of perusing the "writing" section of my campus bookstore without success, I knew at first glance that I had to buy your book. Now after hours of voracious reading, I must say that without a doubt, it is one of the most practical, creative, and engaging book out there for aspiring writers. Thank you." ~ Robert Nelb, Yale University
"I met you last year at the Suncoast Florida Writers' Festival in St. Pete. I bought Georgia Under Water and was profoundly moved, I could relate to a lot of it (read: uneven early childhood experiences) and loved the beauty of your writing and sensitivity. I also bought Page after Page and it turned out to be just what I needed - a reminder to put the play back into my writing process. Later that year I helped form a new poetry workshop, with five other women, and my writing's taken off. Now I want to get back into fiction again, and the possibilities seem endless. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, humor, challenges, and sense of fun. You are so spirited. That's how I want to be, about my writing. (I'm pretty upbeat about my life in general and just was mired by Fear Of The Page.) THANK YOU THANK YOU. It was a wonderful experience to meet you and talk with you. Please consider me a fan!" ~ Kim Rose, Gainesville, Florida
I've hunted high and low for some sort of writing companion that parallels the experience of writing a book only to find many manuals and books professing the secrets to a great novel. Those books did not speak to me, but yours delivered warm, friendly advice and support and I found a new best friend. It sits right next to me when I write and when I'm not writing it sits on the top of my pile of books next to my couch so I can see it and grab it whenever I like--your book has become one of the symbols I use to surround myself with constant reminders of my work-in-progress. It's kind of like my book's big brother just hangin' out and waiting to see my project manifest--it holds no judgment, no inner critic, no ridiculous demands; simply a warm and patient smile as it sees the pages of my manuscript grow. It is much more gentle than any of my friends that I tell, "I am writing a book." Your book doesn't force a smile and nod at me when I'm looking and then roll its eyes and shake its head the second I turn my back. I must say, I love the size and style of the actual book itself. It is such a beautiful book-- the colors on the cover, the design of the pages--it really is so nice. It's a showpiece all on its own. ~ Gemma C, Canada
