CHRYSTOPH MARTEN’s gallery will host a site-specific reading, book-launch, and exhibit of artwork on the subject of hair in an exhibit space that also serves as a salon. “HAIR” is a hand-bound, limited-edition chapbook of texts and images (art, poetry, and prose) from Cover Story, an imprint of Q Avenue Press. A selection of poems will be exhibited as prints. Featured art includes photographs by Paola Ferrario, Helen Verbanz, John Kramer, and reprints of woodcuts (of samurai hair) by Beatriz Inglessis.

At Feb. 9^th, 7:00 sharp, ten of these 19 contributors will read from their work: Roger Mitchell, Heather Sellers, Nin Andrews, Elizabeth Macklin, Ross Gay, Elaine Sexton, Scott Hightower, Sarah Van Arsdale, Curtis Bauer, Kate Lutzner, Cynthia Nadelman, Ron Slate, Charles Flowers, Robin Messing, Marion Brown, Patrick Rosal, Sarah Salm, Nell Regan, and Babs Davies. 

A FREE e-book edition of “HAIR” will go live Feb. 9^th.

* Marten, a hair stylist, counts numerous artists as clients, often exhibiting art in his Chelsea space. His work with prominent artists includes binding the hair of two people together for Marina Abramovic’s 2009 retrospective at MOMA.

becoming an artist.

So so so so good.

 Two things she said that I really want to help my students, and myself, keep at the very center of our process this semester:

1.  You don’t know what you are going to get until you get there.  You can’t plan your art.  You have to go to the place (for writers, that is the dream space) and notice what is there.

2. The small things are the things that end up “making” the piece.  You have to keep an eye for the tiny things, and you never can know where they will be or what they will be, or even that you have them when you happen upon them. You often aren’t going to know, for a long time, what you have.

It’s this kind of eye towards mystery, and this patience with not knowing, that I’m trying to teach. And practice.
