Last Day of Class High Point

Dec 10th, 2009 by admin in High Point of the Day, Hope, Teaching

I cried a little tiny bit on the last day of ENGL 279. These magnificent women. This class was so present, so focused, so kind, and they produced such amazing writing. I loved loved loved going to that room in Martha Miller every Tuesday and Thursday. It’s been a difficult fall in so many ways, and there was this oasis, ENGL 279. These women. So funny and sweet and patient. So today when Amanda D said, “Maybe could you fail us? So we can keep having this class this semester? All of us could fail?” I wrote it down because knew it would be my high point. And I know there will be a day soon I’ll need to remember this lovely lovely sweet moment and my little tears.

I thought the high point was going to be an hour earlier, when I walked into the last class of ENGL 155, my delightful intro poets, poetry for non-majors. Matt and Jeffrey had a Yule log going on the video screen, a You Tube Yule Log, so we had a virtual fire. Christmas carols on the speakers. We sat under the fire, and blessed the new chapbooks into being.

Love love love love these classes.

  • Great to read that post, Heather. Reminds us that for all its hassles teaching can truly be the most nourishing profession imagninable. Glad your tough semester ended so well. Happy holidays!
