Ten Tender High Points from a Sad Cold Rainy Week

The high point of all of it: talking to David.

On a balcony, Indian Summer, twilight, twenty floors over the Grand River, watching it waver in competition with the river of cars: louder, brighter, faster, harder on 131. An artery by a spine. Much lost.

Helen.

A bite of incredibly delicious steak.

Assistance with my coat. Assistance with my hair vastly vast and unhappy inside my coat.

Not eating at the Dog Pit.

Bonnie Jo Campbell, Michigan writer, nominated for a National Book Award. Wayne State University Press.

Friends who make art: Nancy Eimers, Mary Brodbeck, Alison McGhee, Lorraine Lopez, Ann Turkle, Ellen X., Cynthia McKean. Friends who make history: Lynn, Jeanne, Janis.

Finding my dog when he escaped. It was all my fault and we were both clear about that so the apologizing when in the right direction.

American Angels.

Talking to David Junior in Afghanistan for two hours. He is so pure and good and kind and sweet and strong. He requests poetry and stew.
