Fourth Genre

Oct 23rd, 2009 by admin in High Point of the Day, Teaching, Writing

I am so happy to have my work in this magazine. So happy to read this whole issue of this magazine. I’ll send the Ander’s article on D and D to my boys. I love his writing, and Joy Castro’s, Bob Cowser’s, Brenda Hillman’s….  Some people go to bars or fields or kitchens to hang out with friends. I’m going to literary magazines these days….

This essay I wrote scares me a little bit, a lot bit.

But I like its ending—I like how at the end it turns around, completely, and there’s this pedagogical coda in list form! I just love that. I’m sure I’ve seen it done somewhere but I feel as though I invented this ending—a list of bossy instructions. I wonder if one read the essay twice, would that teaching light shine, and illuminate my point?

Without great compassion for the darkest parts of self, the weakest students, the most annoying people, I don’t think one can love, be loved, or move forward.

Just a dumb side note—I can never figure out what the other three genres are. But it doesn’t bother me……my department is considering publishing a journal of A papers. Someone suggested the Journal of C+ Papers. That’s most of it.
