High Point Thursday

Amelia Stripes and Plaid
Telling my students about Amelia The Oracle. Them loving her as I do. Amelia, who always wears plaid skirts with striped tops.
Last night, my six year old friend, Amelia, comes to my house and says “Heather, you look exhausted. You must need an Amelia Break.”
Yes! I do! This is what I need. It’s all I need.

Amelia is very creative. She loves the word “vinaigrette.” She loves the word “catywampus” and “indeed.” Me too. She made a beautiful picture of Jacob riding a dolphin, sinking a pirate ship with spears. “Fresh Amelia Made!” She said she knows she is creative, but she can’t try. “You can’t try to do it. You have to not try. When you don’t try, creative is just all there.” And with that, she swept her hand to the side, and pointed, and I could see it.
I told her: this is what I tell my students every day!
The high point of my day today was telling my students about Amelia’s wonderful wisdom and wonderful wardrobe of ideas and images. And when Charity raised her hand and I called on her and she said, “Can Amelia come to class?” That was the high point inside my high point, the sweetest part.
I love my students. I’d be lost on this earth without Amelia. My perro would be very weak.

Everyone needs an Amelia! It’s amazing how kids simplify things and get right to the core, with a look or a word.
