Men with Pillows
The Reformed Church of America has its great annual meeting Synod, here at my school this week and it took me a few days to piece it all together. I’d been noticing men–ordinary men in short-sleeve business shirts–carrying pillows across campus. One here, one there. They look so vulnerable and out-of-place and dejected, these grown men with their pillows. Like men carrying canvas satchels. I want to give them all bags, real bags. I want to offer some kind of protection: let us assemble our sleeping gear unseen! I know that I am weird, and they are not, but still. Men on campus with pillows, milling about on an ordinary afternoon in June, in hard-edged sunlight, well… It’s somewhere between completely bizarre and total abandon and necessity–and I like it.
