We met at New Holland, with all the chapbooks. Each one was beautiful in its own perfect
way. Each student stood up. We honored each person’s contributions to our class. When
Tiffany said “You can too have a happy ending, don’t let anyone tell you you can’t.” When
Travis used his eyebrows. When Steve was just so smart all the time. When Maggie fought.
When Krista said, yes yes yes. When Alyssa was outed as a valedictorian. When Meghan
had her breakthrough. What most astounded me during the Last Class of ENGL 454 SP 09
was how many are writing by hand! I had thought all of them hated writing by hand
except Ario and Rachel. They are all doing it The Slowest Way!
Instead of just ordering water, like my classes usually do when they decide we must have
class at the local, they ordered Actual Menu Items. This class was like a Buick. It wasn’t
flashy. It wasn’t racy. It wasn’t glitz or drama or edge or wacked out. It was just a green
Buick, steady, solid, gets you where you need to go. What great drivers at the wheel.
And they loved their groups! And wrote by hand! (I’m still getting used to this. Wow.)
