I’m Not Going To Sell Any of The Books Back!

Apr 29th, 2009 by admin in Teaching

Nicholle was just by my office, turning in her final pieces of writing and she said how much she loved our class, and how sorry she was it was ending. Oh, me too, me too! Then, she said the words every teacher lives to hear: “I’m not going to sell any of the books back for this class. I’m keeping them all!”

This is really all I need to keep going strong as a teacher.

(Nicholle is going to be a teacher, too, and she said what she loved about my class was how I am really excited about writing. She said some profs, they seem like they don’t want to be there. Well, I said. It’s hard after twenty years. You’ve probably thought about it, I said. How will you keep yourself alive, creatively, in twenty years? It is not easy.  I have struggled. I told Nicholle for me, it’s taking a class every summer, that’s what keeps me invigorated: being a student. And doing my writing every day.)

But really: she’s keeping the books. Makes me feel like I got an A in my own class. And, (ED–this is for you!): Nicholle said “I’m keeping your book, of course. I wrote so much in it. They probably wouldn’t buy it back anyway.”

Endings are really really hard.

But my students, some of them, are keeping their books.

A+.
