Alyssa’s Tenth Birthday

Apr 18th, 2009 by admin in Diary

Alyssa turned ten and we’ve been planning this for a long time. She got to choose

the jewels she wanted from my collection of vintage costume jewelry (coral parure,

it’s perfect for her!) and then we went to dinner, then to the park for a round of brutal

Obstacle Coursing and then we went to Meijer and looked at shoes and bought a little

music, and some batteries, stickers (monkeys!) and Teen Beat. Then, I lit ten candles

for her at my house, and as she blew out each one, she made a wish: world peace.

That everyone who doesn’t have a job gets a job. Those were her wishes. Over and over.

And in the smoke trails, we found the right letters: W O R … some Js and Os and Bs….

I’ve been feeling so lonely and sorry for my own bones these days…and now, thanks

to this wise good child, I am seeing the light.
