Reading In Grand Rapids April 9

Mar 25th, 2009 by admin in Hope, Writing

dscn0619I’m giving a reading in Grand Rapids at the wonderful Literary Life Bookstore, on Wealthy Street, SE at the corner of Eastern and Wealthy, on April 9 at 7 pm.  There will be music.  The winners of the poetry contest I am judging will be announced. And my student, the transcendent and glorious Krista Mehari, will also read a short excerpt from her novel-in-progress. Free snacks! Free night! Beautiful books!

I hope people will come.  I think about readings a lot. I think about Kay Ryan saying, “I like to read my work but I don’t really like to hear other people read theirs that much.”

I think I am going to read from my new essay on religion. Or maybe the Face Book. Which I just delivered to my agent! FIVE YEARS of work. I feel lucky tonight, and happy to have a career that attends to me as much as I attend to it.  Today in class I showed the great Gary Hawkins Larry Brown movie….   and I have a lot of questions. How much time do we spend on our work? How much time do we spend with the people we love? What’s fear and what is focus?
