Class Stayed Late

They were having so much fun reading each other’s work and discussing it, they lost track of the time. It was 1:20, when class ends, and no one was making a move to pack up. I didn’t want to tell them! J was shouting across the room—“You have to read S’s pantoum! You have to! It’s the greatest!” and in her group, N. was laughing so hard, she had to put her head down on her desk.

It was a high point of my teaching career, Tuesday in room 224 of Lubbers, when I had to tell the students, “It’s time to go!”
