Spring 2008 Course Description: Introduction to Creative Writing Technique

Oct 2nd, 2007 by admin in Hope

I’m teaching this course Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. I’ll also offer it in May term.

Do you love to write but find yourself procrastinating? Do you enjoy creative writing but wish you knew more about exactly what it is that readers and editors look for? Do you have ideas but struggle to get them on the page? Welcome! Instead of focusing on one specific genre (poetry, fiction, nonfiction, screenplay, or graphic) this course teaches the underlying tips, techniques, and secrets for successful creative writing in any genre you choose. By the end of the term, you’ll be more clear about what it is you already do well and you’ll also be able to conjure the muse on command.  A new focusing method will cure your procrastinationitis for good; you’ll quickly notice a difference in the work you do for other courses.

This course is appropriate for absolute beginners and for writers who have worked well in one or more genres and want to expand their range. Reading load: medium. Writing load: steady; chapbook (portfolio) in place of final exam. Atmosphere: informal, salad-bar-esque (choose what you like, sample, skip what you loathe).
